Arvind Kejriwal News Highlights: ED gets 6-day custody; Delhi CM won't change, says AAP
Arvind Kejriwal Arrest Live: INDIA bloc has thrown its weight, accusing PM Narendra Modi of ‘dictatorship', after Delhi CM was arrested in liquor policy case.
Arvind Kejriwal News Highlights: In a massive setback to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Arvind Kejriwal, the party's national convenor and Delhi chief minister, was sent to six days in Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody in connection with the Delhi excise policy case on Friday night. This is the most high-profile arrest in the case and makes him the first sitting chief minister to be arrested.
Following the arrest by ED on Thursday, the AAP staged protests in the national capital; the Opposition too condemned ED's action.
Also, in what would be a constitutional crisis, the AAP has already declared that its leader will continue to run his government from jail. Thus, Kejriwal is the first chief minister to lead a government from jail.
Why ED arrested Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal?
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday following searches at his official residence and an interrogation lasting nearly two hours.
• The arrest is linked to a money laundering investigation concerning the excise policy case of the Delhi government.
• In court on Friday, the ED said that Arvind Kejriwal was the “kingpin” behind the alleged Delhi liquor scam.
• The case involves suspected corruption and money laundering related to the formulation and execution of the Delhi government's excise policy for 2021-22, which was later revoked.
• According to the Enforcement Directorate (ED), leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) allegedly received kickbacks totalling ₹100 crores in connection with the excise policy.
